A Mother's Story

Even before my twin boys were born, I knew something was wrong. Jesse kicked and squirmed inside me, but Joey lay too quiet beside his brother's side. I had a feeling that something was wrong; something awful!

Hemophilia never occurred to me. Neither I nor my husband had bleeding disorders in our family history. Tests were done on our babies, when a routine heel prick refused to mend. Both boys had Hemophilia A. So foreign was this diagnosis to us that a nurse brought in an Encyclopedia to look up the term.

Further tests on Joey revealed that his inactivity was caused by a major bleed in his brain. At seven days old he had surgery to remove the blood clot. Four days after he went home, Joey suffered another head bleed.

Then we received a dire prognosis. They said that Joey was never going to be able to see or crawl because of the damage to his brain, and that he was most likely going to die within days. All we could do was love him and care for him. We were literally within inches of him at all ties in case he passed away.

But Joey showed us a miracle. Not only did he live; he thrived! Today, he and his twin brother romp through the living room, pester their big brother, and wrestle over toys like normal kids.

Our family did receive a miracle with the twins, and we learned how precious their health and happiness really are. With the same love and care, we will continue to experience every day the miracle they bring.

Sincerely,

Suzie Harlan
